Days 10 & 11

Remember the last post? Our schedule continues to be fairly consistent. The biggest difference being that Myra and I had a comprehensive test on Friday testing on all of the kanji and stuff we have learned in the past week - 72 kanji and about 4 times that many words, for me at least, Myra knew most of them already. Admittedly, I didn’t actually learn all of the words, maybe a third of them if that even sticks. But I did memorize how to draw each one of those 72 kanji plus a few more. I even have most of the stroke orders down, even if I sometimes ignore them.
(Each kanji has a specified order for each stroke - first this line here, then this one here, and so on.)
I learned the translation of each kanji and at least one reading, sometimes both.
There are two categories of kanji readings - the kunyomi which is the Japanese reading assigned to the character and the onyomi which is sort of the original Chinese reading. In addition, there can be multiple kun- or on- yomi, so a kanji might have only one reading or ten.Unfortunately, it is kind of important with most kanji to know both the kun and on yomi. Fortunately, knowing half the readings is a good start. I don’t think I did great, but I didn’t do all that badly either. Myra probably did excellently.
We will report the final results on Monday.

  1. I'm very impressed you can learn and memorize that much, both of you.
