Day 12 - Dec 26 - In which we happily do nothing

We slept in a little longer, at a leisurely breakfast, then retired to our rooms to read.

All but Mia and Dad went to the beach to swim, walk the sand, and ride waves for almost two hours, then all swam in the pool. After this we feasted on Santa snacks that held us over until dinner.

The resort restaurant was having their day off, so we went up the road to a little place with hanging fish ornaments and ate a hearty dinner while watching events on the road, such as the truck of coconuts driving by with the monkey hanging on to the side.

The walk home was lit by the shine of the almost-full moon.

A quick observation on the relaxed atmosphere of Thailand restaurants:
Sometimes (such as this night), there is no one around and no indication the place is in operation. Almost all restaurants are open air, so there are no windows with 'OPEN' signs. They kind of seat us but mostly we seat ourselves. They bring a menu then arrive almost immediately and hang about waiting for us to order. And there's no ordering drinks first, then order the meal, then order dessert -- we learned quickly that once we handed the menus back, that was it. They take the order and usually the service is quick, but they never note who ordered what, they just bring it to the table and let us sort it out (sometimes they tell us what dish it is). We can never tell how much English they can speak. But they are always polite and try to figure out what we're trying to ask for. Of all the places we've been only once was there was food we didn't like (well, not counting the snorkeling tour and the train). Food in Thailand is a highlight!
