Day 8 - Dec 22 - We Found Nemo

Today we went snorkeling, a full-day with Diamond Tours to visit 3 prime spots and Koh Nangyuan. We started with Shark Bay. Unfortunately the weather was a bit stormy in the early morning, so none of us saw any sharks. Disappointing, but the other locations proved to be more exciting.

Spot 2 (as seen in picture) was maybe Anyua Bay (but probably not), it had gorgeous coral collections and hundreds and hundreds or maybe thousands of fish.
There were the crowds of hand-length fish and finger-length fish just chillin', and a variety of colored fish darting about the coral formations.

Spot 3 was Mango Bay, sadly the bay had a lot of trash collecting near the shore, but the coral and fish were awesome as always. Here we saw squid. They lined up like guards along the side of our designated swimming area, their 5-inch silvery bodies rolling gently with the currents... and they didn't like people as much as the other fish. They would start to move away pretty quickly. Myra did manage to corner a loner, chase it with her amazing speed, until the poor thing was forced to ink out. Thus it was proven they were squid.

Spot the Last was Koh Nangyuan, a tinsy island right off of Koh Tao with some nice beaches and decent snorkeling. The coral formations were nowhere near as cool as the other places but the variety of fish was the same.
There was also a viewpoint at the top of one of the two peaks (see picture).

Other exciting creatures besides the squid and coral: sea anemone blowing in the wind with their clownfish-like inhabitants keeping out all other interested parties; sea urchins poking their black spindles from crevices (or lying in wait like mine fields as Ani and I witnessed); slimy and spiky sea cucumbers; angel fish; cleaner wrasses cleaning their victims-- er, clients; pretty yellow and large multi-colored fish Myra enjoyed chasing (yellow/black one was named Rachel); sand-colored and yellow fish hiding in the sand/coral; a spitting fish that grabbed a bite, then spit it out to the interest of its followers; the neon blue bitties with yellow tails; the spindly silver ones that may be barracudas; the rainbowy maybe parrot-fish; and the little 'flowers' that hid when we passed our hands too near.

We managed to get Myra's waterproof case to work with Mia's camera and thus are able to show you these amazing pictures (they are not blurry! or at least not much). It appears Mia is being sucked under by a terrible beast and Dad appears to be unconscious but these are some of the dangers of snorkeling. In salt water so strong it burns your eyes/nose/tongue and you float whether you want to or not.

It was an awesome fun day that left us exhausted. We tried out another restaurant (also good) then retired to our rooms to do stuff like write blog posts and postcards.

Tomorrow, we set sail for another island!
