Day 5 - Dec 19 - The Dismal Train

Bangkok was fun. The people were nice, the traffic was entertaining, if not scary, to watch, and the hotel was nice. We also enjoyed the Christmas decorations and the strange shopping centers. But now the time came to take a train to the city of Chumphon!

Our train was scheduled to depart at 8:05AM, but we heard it wasn't unusual if the trains were 4-6 hours late; none the less we had a taxi pick us up at 6:45AM. We ran a little late, but we squished into the taxi basically on time, and it was lucky that we got the taxi so early: It took nearly 40 minutes to get to the train station when it was only supposed to take about 20 minutes. We waited while some of the family used the restroom, then we got to our platform and the train arrived. Talk about perfect timing.

There was plenty of room on the seats, there were tray tables, and a lady who passed out drinks and food, but the train was very dismal. It's hard to explain, and you couldn't get the right image with a picture, but it wasn't a happy train. However everyone enjoyed the relaxing time where we could read and sleep!

Finally, around 7 hours later, we arrived in Chumphon. Myra was the only one who saw anything interesting out the window on the ride, but all of us were happy with the restful day. We had a five-person truck puck us up, so Ani was on Dad's lap, four of us were in the back, and the driver drove, but the drive was short. Right when we arrived at our hotel all of us were very excited. The rooms are nice (love the bathrooms), and we had a delicious meal in the hotel's restaurant. We agreed that it was the best meal of the trip so far. At the end of our meal we saw the first rainfall we've seen in a long time. Let me tell you, it was wonderful.

Myra's Personal Note On This Day:
Early to rise, traffic to depart, train all day 'cross country (south) past Rocky Mountains, palm trees, birds and fields, palm trees, cattle, rough dwellings, palm trees, and golden-roofed mansions atop pointy hills; ok pastries, icky meal, rickety train and rickety bathroom, dirty and uncomfortable seats -- but A/C and no walking, lots of reading!
